We’re Friends

‘Will you play with me?’ the Little One said
As the walking path stretched out ahead.
They talked and sang as they walked along
Glad that they both knew the same song.
They forgot that they were tired and hot
The trees were silent, the birds were not.

‘Are we friends?’ she asked. ‘Of course we are.
But we’re more than that. Closer by far.
Our fathers are brothers. We’re cousins you see
There’s a family tie between you and me.
We read the same books, we know the words when we sing
We play the same games, we do the same thing.’

‘Do you think we’ll be friends when we’re older too?’
‘What’s going to change between me and you?’
‘We’ll read the same books, and we’ll know the words when we sing
We’ll play the same games, we’ll do the same thing.’

‘Is that enough?’ ‘There is one more thing.
We’ll be kind to each other and share everything.’
